Watauga Beats Tabor 6-3 On One Error Plagued Spartan Inning
What started off as a pitchers duel accompanied by tight defense both ways, turned into a 6-3 Mount Tabor loss. The Pioneers got off to a quick lead 1-0 in the first and Tabor couldn't get anything going in their first two at bats. In the third, Watauga threatened to tally another run after jamming the bases with only 1 out. But good Tabor defense turned them away with only a big goose egg to hang on the board. The Spartans came back in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Bradley Morton, who turned in his pullover basketball uni for his button down #5 jersey, reached first on an error at third, joining Montana Dawson on base. Next up, Cole Penn smacks a two-out single to right field driving in Dawson to tie the game. The tight Tabor D continued through the fifth, backing up a very strong pitching performance by Jon Gordon who had batters baffled by his breaking ball. In the bottom half of five, Matt McConnell steps up to bat with the bases loaded and hits a sacrifice fly to deep right, easily scoring Dawson from third. Morton, who was second, decided to head for home. The catcher bobbled the throw and Bradley slid in safely to give the Spartans a 3-1 lead and renewed energy in the dugout. But once again, like at Glen and East Rowan, the sixth inning was trouble for the Spartans as they gave up 5 runs on six errors. Watauga took the lead 6-3, which ended up being the final as the Pioneers turned away the meat of Tabor's line up 1, 2, 3 in the bottom of seven to end the game. The Spartans are hitting the ball and getting good innings from their pitching staff. But one bad inning of errors each game has led to three of four losses and held them back from getting their first win of the early 2011 season.
