Spartan's Hang On...Finish Beach Trip with 12-10 Win over Fordham, NY. Come home 2-2.
Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, SC
The wind was blowing out to right again on Saturday but the sun was out and the temp were in the low 60's to start Tabor's last game of their four day beach trip. Playing the third game in less than 24 hours put a strain on the pitching staff so Patrick Ronan took the bump to start. It was not only his first apprance of the season but first in over five years!. MT's mighty bats took over where they ended Friday night and put five big runs on the board before Ronan threw his first pitch. Morton, Dawson and McConnell continued their hot hitting while crafty baserunning, sparked by speedy Spartan Neil Callahan, moved men around the diamond and across the plate. Afer two innings, MT was up 9-2. Ronan tired early in the third so Coach Lovelace turned to Cole Penn to take over....also the first appearance for Cole. Fordham started hitting the holes with their wooden bats and closed the gap to 9-5 before Montana Dawson took the mound. Fordham stayed strong and tied the game 9-9 in the bottom of the fourth. Tabor kept Fordham chasing the lead after the Spartans scored a run in the fifth, sixth and seventh on some key hits, including Neil Callahan again, who continues to get on base any way he can. Jon Gordon came in to close out the game and Tabor took this 2 hour and 40 minutes game 12-10. The trip was a great time as always and MT played good ball If not for a tough bottom of 7 on Thursday, they would have come home 3-1. A lot of players saw lots of action in the field and at bat which was just what Coach Lovelace was looking for going into the meat of the season. MT plays four games this week, beginning at home Monday vs. Northwest Guilford. They have two conference games this week: Tuesday vs. Reagan and Friday at Davie and a Saturday trip to Watagua.
